Jesus in Galilee is a powerful theme revealed through the resurrection story written by the apostles. They clearly record that Jesus rose early on Sunday morning, as mentioned in Matthew 28:1, Mark 16:2, Luke 24:1, and John 20:1. All four Gospel writers confirm this truth.

Mary Magdalene came to the tomb while it was still dark, during the final watch of the night between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM. She saw that the stone had been rolled away.

The Greek word used here is “Airo,” which means “lifted up” or “taken away.”

As the women stood in fear after seeing the angel at the tomb, the angel comforted them, saying, “Do not be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.” The same angels who announced His birth were now proclaiming His resurrection. In this moment, the hope of Jesus begins to unfold.

The angel further declared, “He is going ahead of you into Galilee; there you will see Him.” This raises an important question, why Galilee? Jesus was crucified in Jerusalem, buried in Jerusalem, and resurrected in Jerusalem. Yet, He chose Galilee as the place where His disciples would see Him. This shows the deep spiritual significance of Jesus in Galilee.

The importance of Galilee is rooted in prophecy. Isaiah 9:1 says that in the latter times, God would make the region of Galilee glorious. This prophecy was fulfilled in Matthew 15:29-31. Jesus went to the Sea of Galilee, climbed a mountain, and sat down.

Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, blind, mute, and many others. Jesus healed them all. The mute spoke, the crippled were restored, the lame walked, and the blind saw. The people were amazed and glorified the God of Israel. Through these miracles, the glory of Jesus in Galilee became evident.

Matthew 4:23 also tells us that Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching, preaching, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

Because of His mighty works, people from Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan followed Him. The ministry of Jesus in Galilee drew multitudes and revealed God’s power.

Jesus was brought up in Nazareth, a town in Galilee. During His childhood, King Herod ruled and ordered the killing of innocent children. After Herod’s death, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, instructing him to return to Israel.

Eventually, they settled in Nazareth, fulfilling prophecy. This shows that even from His early life, the story of Jesus in Galilee was being prepared according to God’s plan.

In Matthew 26:32, Jesus Himself prophesied, “After I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” True to His word, He rose from the dead before the women reached the tomb.

When they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. The angel confirmed that Jesus had gone ahead into Galilee. This reveals that immediately after His resurrection, Jesus in Galilee became the focal point of His divine plan.

Why did Jesus go to galilee first?

There is also a deep emotional and spiritual reason for this. Many women who had faithfully served Jesus followed Him from Galilee.

Matthew 27:55 says that these women stood near the cross, watching His suffering. They had witnessed His pain, His crown of thorns, the nails in His hands and feet, and His wounded body. Their hearts were filled with sorrow.

But on the day of resurrection, Jesus went to Galilee to reveal His glorified body. The wounds of suffering were no longer the focus, He appeared in victory.

Through this, Jesus in Galilee brought comfort and healing to those grieving women. Their sorrow turned into joy, and their mourning into praise.

It can be understood that before appearing to the disciples, Jesus chose to reveal Himself to those who loved Him deeply and served Him faithfully. In doing so, He fulfilled His prophecy and showed His compassion. The presence of Jesus in Galilee restored hope, strengthened faith, and fulfilled God’s promises.
