The Blessings of Joshua and the Seven Powerful Promises

The Blessings of Joshua reveal how God chose Joshua to lead the Israelites after Moses and remained faithful to His promises throughout his life. Although Moses prepared Joshua for leadership, it was God who chose him for this great responsibility. The Lord blessed Joshua, guided him through many difficult circumstances, and granted him victory according to His promises. Let us examine the seven blessings God demonstrated in Joshua’s life through the Scriptures.

The Blessings of Joshua Begin with Redemption

Scripture References: Deuteronomy 4:20; Exodus 12:1-14; Galatians 5:1; 1 Thessalonians 3:3

Only those who have experienced redemption can understand its true value. The Israelites were slaves in Egypt, where they endured suffering, beatings, oppression, and hardship under Pharaoh’s rule. Yet the Lord delivered them from Egypt, which He described as an iron furnace (Deuteronomy 4:20).

The blood of the Passover lamb distinguished the Israelites and was central to their deliverance. In the same way, those who are cleansed through the precious blood of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, are redeemed from the bondage of sin. Just as God rescued the Israelites from the furnace of Egypt, Jesus Christ delivers us from the slavery of sin.

Galatians 5:1 reminds us that Christ has set us free so that we may live in freedom. Although the Israelites suffered under Pharaoh’s rule, God delivered them and made them His own people. Likewise, through the blood of Jesus Christ, sinners receive redemption. Joshua was among those whom God delivered from Egypt. His life reminds us that God’s saving power is the foundation of a life devoted to Him. This is the first of the Blessings of Joshua.

Joshua Was Chosen to Lead God’s People

Scripture References: Numbers 13:1-8, 16; 1 Chronicles 7:20-27; Hebrews 4:8; Matthew 1:21

After the Israelites were delivered from Egypt and entered the wilderness, Moses sent leaders from the twelve tribes to explore the land of Canaan. Joshua, the son of Nun, was chosen from the tribe of Ephraim. Joshua’s original name was Hosea, meaning “salvation.” Moses called him Joshua, a name meaning “the Lord saves.”

Joshua led the Israelites toward the land God had promised them, but he could not provide the ultimate rest that God had prepared for His people. Hebrews 4:8 points to this distinction. Likewise, the law could not redeem people from the bondage of sin. Jesus Christ came to save His people from their sins, as Matthew 1:21 declares.

Those redeemed from sin through Jesus Christ have the promise of an eternal inheritance. Just as Joshua led the Israelites toward their inheritance in Canaan, Jesus Christ is the Savior through whom believers receive the promise of eternal life. The Blessings of Joshua show how God appointed him to lead His redeemed people according to His purpose.

Joshua Was Appointed as Commander of Israel

Scripture Reference: Numbers 27:18–23

God appointed Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and through the wilderness. However, Moses would not enter the Promised Land. Therefore, God appointed Joshua to take his place and lead the people.

Joshua had served alongside Moses and gained valuable experience through their years together. He was a faithful assistant, a trustworthy servant, and a man with the ability to lead God’s people. He had received instruction and gained wisdom through his service.

According to God’s command, Moses laid his hands on Joshua and commissioned him before Eleazar the priest and the entire congregation. Joshua was appointed to carry the responsibility of leading the Israelites after Moses.

Joshua’s appointment was made according to God’s will. His faithful service and experience under Moses prepared him for this responsibility. The Blessings of Joshua demonstrate how God appointed him to lead His people and carry out the work entrusted to him.

God’s Promises Brought Blessings to Joshua

Scripture Reference: Joshua 1:1-9

After Moses died, God spoke to Joshua and gave him promises and instructions for the journey ahead. The Lord assured Joshua of the following

  • 1. The promised land: God promised to give the Israelites every place where they set their feet.
  • 2. Victory over enemies: No one would be able to stand against Joshua throughout his life.
  • 3. God’s presence: The Lord promised to be with Joshua just as He had been with Moses.
  • 4. Strength and courage: God promised never to leave or forsake him and commanded him to be strong and courageous.
  • 5. Faithfulness to God’s Word: Joshua was instructed not to turn away from the Book of the Law.
  • 6. Obedience to God’s commandments: He was commanded to act according to everything written in the Law.
  • 7. God’s guidance: Joshua was assured that the Lord would be with him wherever he went.

These promises strengthened Joshua as he carried the responsibility of leading the Israelites. God instructed him to remain faithful to His Word, obey His commandments, and trust in His presence. Joshua later distributed the land among the tribes according to God’s command.

The Blessings of Joshua demonstrate that God’s promises are accompanied by the responsibility to obey His Word and remain faithful to His instructions.

Joshua Demonstrated Courage and Faith

Scripture References: Numbers 13:30-33; Numbers 14:6-9; Joshua 14:7

Moses sent twelve men from the twelve tribes to explore the land of Canaan. However, most of them returned with a discouraging report. They focused on the strength of the inhabitants and the difficulties of possessing the land.

Joshua and Caleb responded differently. They declared that the land was exceedingly good, a land flowing with milk and honey. They encouraged the Israelites not to rebel against the Lord or fear the people of the land because God was with them.

Joshua and Caleb believed that God would give them the strength to overcome their enemies. Their words reflected faith in God’s power and confidence in His promises.

Because the other Israelites refused to trust God, that generation did not enter the Promised Land. Joshua and Caleb, however, were permitted to enter Canaan. Joshua’s faith enabled him to stand firm when others were discouraged. The Blessings of Joshua remind us of his courage and unwavering confidence in God’s promises.

Blessings of Joshua

Blessings of Joshua Show The Strength Of a Victorious Leader

Scripture References: Exodus 17:9-13; Joshua 10:12-14

When Israel fought against the Amalekites, Joshua led the army into battle. Meanwhile, Moses stood on the hill with the staff of God in his hand. When Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed. When his hands grew tired, Aaron and Hur supported them. Through God’s help, Joshua defeated the Amalekites.

Joshua later led the Israelites in their campaigns to conquer Canaan and helped distribute the land among the tribes. His years of service under Moses had provided valuable training for his leadership.

During one battle in Canaan, Joshua called upon the Lord, and the sun stood still, allowing Israel to complete its victory (Joshua 10:12-14). This event demonstrated God’s power and His help in Israel’s battles.

Joshua became a capable commander who led God’s people through difficult circumstances. His victories were not based on military skill alone but also on his dependence on the Lord. The Blessings of Joshua reveal how God enabled him to fulfill his responsibility and lead the Israelites to victory.

Joshua Remained a Faithful Hero of Faith

Scripture References: Numbers 14:1-9; Joshua 24:29-30

Joshua demonstrated his faith while exploring Canaan, leading the Israelites into battle, and guiding them according to God’s commands. He showed military skill, wisdom, and discipline throughout his campaigns.

Although Joshua was a commander, he remained submitted to the Lord, the true leader of Israel. He depended on God and sought to carry out his responsibilities according to His will.

Pride, greed, excessive ambition, and the pursuit of worldly pleasures did not characterize the life of Joshua as described in your original account. His aim was to remain faithful before God and lead His people according to the responsibility entrusted to him.

Joshua lived to be 110 years old and was buried in his inheritance at Timnath-serah, in the hill country of Ephraim (Joshua 24:29-30).

His life stands as an example of faithfulness, obedience, courage, and dependence on God. The Blessings of Joshua remind us of the importance of remaining faithful to the Lord throughout our lives.

Through these seven blessings, we have examined how God redeemed Joshua, appointed him as a leader and commander, blessed him with His promises, strengthened his courage, granted him victory, and enabled him to remain faithful.

The Blessings of Joshua teach us that God’s promises are not in vain. God remained with Joshua and fulfilled the promises He had given him throughout his life.

In the same way, we must learn to depend on God and trust in His promises. Just as Joshua relied on the Lord, may we also live with faith and confidence in Him, trusting His Word and remaining faithful to His will. May God help us follow the example of Joshua and depend on Him throughout every circumstance of our lives.
